We put a lot of thought into making our houses feel like home, but how often do we think about keeping them secure?
New kitchens, bathrooms, entertainment systems, furniture, decorating, extensions, garden improvements… the list goes on!
We work hard to make our homes somewhere we love spending time, somewhere we're comfortable and somewhere our families can relax.
But how much thought do we actually give to protecting everything we've worked so hard for?
And more importantly, protecting the people who live there?
It's something we feel really strongly about at Herts Security Systems, particularly as we head into the darker winter months.
We want to help people think about their home security before they ever have a reason to wish they'd done something sooner.
A burglary can take more than your belongings
Unfortunately, we've met people who have experienced a burglary, and we've seen just how upsetting it can be.
Of course, having valuables stolen or your property damaged is awful. But it's not always the financial loss that affects people the most.
It's knowing that someone has been inside your home, gone through your belongings and invaded what should be your own private space.
For some people, that feeling doesn't disappear once the locks have been changed or the damage repaired.
You might find yourself checking the doors several times before bed, worrying when you're away from home or feeling uneasy about leaving the children in the house.
We've spoken to people looking to improve their security after something has happened, and while we're always happy to help, we'd much rather have had that conversation with them beforehand.
If we can help someone avoid going through that experience in the first place, that's what matters to us.
We protect our homes in so many other ways
We insure our homes and cars, have our boilers serviced, fit smoke alarms and make sure our doors and windows are in good condition.
We do these things because we know it's better to be prepared than deal with a problem later.
But home security can sometimes get pushed further down the list.
Perhaps you've thought about getting an alarm but never got around to it. Maybe you've moved into a property with an old system and aren't sure whether it works. Or perhaps you assume that because you've never had a problem, you probably won't.
And hopefully you never will.
But security shouldn't have to start with something going wrong and we always say Prevention is better than cure.
So, how can you better protect your home and family?
The good news is that improving your home security doesn't necessarily mean making huge changes or spending a fortune.
Sometimes it's about looking at your property from a different perspective and working out where you might be vulnerable.
Here are a few of the ways we can help.
Intruder Alarms
An intruder alarm is one of the first things we'd recommend considering when protecting your home.
A professionally installed alarm can act as a visible deterrent, making an opportunistic burglar think twice about targeting your property.
If someone does attempt to enter, the alarm is designed to detect that activity and raise the alert.
Modern systems can also connect to your smartphone, allowing you to set and unset your alarm remotely and receive notifications when you're away.
It's not about constantly worrying about what's happening at home. It's about having something in place that's looking out for it when you're not there.
CCTV
CCTV can provide another layer of security, particularly around driveways, entrances, garages and other areas of your property.
Visible cameras may discourage someone from approaching in the first place, while recorded footage can be useful if an incident does occur, and with many modern systems, you can check what's happening around your property directly from your phone.
But it's important that cameras are positioned properly and cover the areas that actually matter.
There's little point spending money on CCTV if it doesn't capture what you need it to.
That's why we always look at the individual property before recommending anything.

Looking at the areas you might have overlooked
Sometimes the biggest improvements come from the simplest changes.
A side gate that doesn't lock properly. A poorly lit entrance. A garage full of expensive tools. A garden office that isn't connected to your existing alarm.
These are all things that can be easily overlooked when you're used to seeing your property every day.
We can help identify areas that might benefit from additional protection and talk through what would make sense for your home.
That doesn't always mean installing more equipment. Sometimes a few practical changes can make a real difference.
Why Winter is a good time to think about security
With the clocks going back and the evenings getting darker, many of us are arriving home when it's dark.
Our routines change, we're spending more time indoors and, as Christmas approaches, homes can contain more valuable items than usual.
Darker evenings can also provide more opportunities for someone to approach a property without being easily noticed.
It's a sensible time to check your outdoor lighting, make sure your existing security equipment is working and consider whether there are any gaps in your home's protection.
But while we're talking about winter, home security really should be something we think about all year round.
You don't need to know what security system you want
You don't need to come to us knowing exactly which alarm, cameras or equipment you need.
That's our job!
Every home is different. What works for a large detached property with several outbuildings might be completely unnecessary for a smaller house.
We'll talk to you about your property, your concerns and your budget, and explain the options available.
If you already have a security system, we can look at whether it's still suitable and whether it needs servicing or upgrading.
We're not interested in selling you equipment you don't need. We'd much rather help you get the right protection in place, even if that means making use of what you've already got.
Let's protect your home before something happens
Nobody wants to imagine their home being broken into, and we're certainly not here to frighten anyone into buying a security system.
But having seen how upsetting a burglary can be for the people affected, we genuinely believe prevention is worth thinking about.
Your home is more than the furniture, gadgets and belongings inside it.
It's where your family sleeps, where your children grow up and where you should be able to switch off at the end of the day.
And that's worth protecting.
