The Security Risks That Come With Spending More Time Outdoors

As the weather improves, many of us naturally spend more time outside.

Enjoying the garden, hosting friends and family, tackling outdoor projects and making the most of gardens and outdoor spaces become an extension of the home throughout spring and summer and even into Autumn!

However, as our routines change, so do some of our security habits. This isn’t because we're being careless, but because we're focused on enjoying the outdoors rather than thinking about what might be happening elsewhere around the property.

The good news here is that most of the common security risks associated with warmer weather are easy to address once you're aware of them and all coincide with security risks we’ve mentioned earlier on in previous blogs!

Open doors become the new normal

One of the biggest changes during the warmer months is how often doors and windows are left open, especially in our British heat.

Patio doors, bifold doors, and rear entrances are frequently opened to let fresh air in or make moving between the house, garden or out to the car easier.

While that's part of enjoying the warm weather, it's worth remembering that an open rear door can sometimes be forgotten about, particularly in larger properties or homes with extensive gardens.

If you're gardening at the far end of the garden, entertaining guests, or moving between different outdoor areas, it can be surprisingly easy to lose sight of whether access points to the property are still secure. As an example, whilst enjoying a late night BBQ, you might forget the windows which have been left open at the front of the property…leaving an opportunity for intruders wide open to come in and simply take something valuable very quickly!

Being mindful of what's open and what isn't can make a significant difference.

Garden gates and side access

Side gates are another area that often gets more use during spring and summer.

Garden equipment is brought in and out, bins are moved more regularly, and children may be coming and going throughout the day.

As a result, gates that would normally remain closed can end up being left open for convenience.

While this might not seem particularly important, side access often provides a direct route to the rear of a property where doors, windows, and other entry points may be less visible from the street.

A quick check at the end of the day can help ensure that access remains as secure as intended.

Valuables don't just live inside the house

When people think about home security, they often focus on what's inside the property, but during the summer months, valuable items frequently make their way outside.

Garden furniture, barbecues, power tools, bicycles, lawn equipment, and outdoor entertainment systems can all represent a significant investment.

Many of these items are left outside for convenience, particularly when they're being used regularly.

There's nothing wrong with making the most of your outdoor space, but it's worth considering what remains visible and accessible once the day comes to an end.

Sometimes, simple storage solutions or additional visibility from existing security systems can provide added peace of mind.

Don't forget garden offices and summer houses

Over the last few years, garden offices, studios, and summer houses have become increasingly popular.

Many of these buildings now contain valuable equipment, including laptops, monitors, business equipment, tools, and personal belongings.

Yet they are more often than not, treated differently from the main property when it comes to security because these spaces sit separately from the house, it's important to think about how they're protected and monitored, particularly if they contain items of significant value.

A garden office may be used every day, but if it's not properly secured when you're finished for the evening, it can quickly become a vulnerable part of the property.

Summer entertaining can create distractions

Long evenings often mean more opportunities to entertain.

Barbecues, garden parties, and outdoor gatherings are all part of what makes this time of year enjoyable.

However, when guests are arriving, food is being prepared, and people are moving between indoor and outdoor spaces, security naturally moves down the priority list.

Doors may be left open longer than usual, access points may not be monitored as closely, and items can sometimes be left unattended.

Again, this isn't about being overly cautious. It's simply about recognising that busy social occasions can create distractions, making it easier for small things to be overlooked.

A few simple habits go a long way

The purpose of good security isn't to stop you enjoying your property, in fact, it can help you enjoy your property even more knowing everything is secure as it can be.

It's also about allowing you to relax knowing that sensible measures are already in place.

Being aware of open access points, securing valuable items when they're not in use, and ensuring that security systems are working properly can all help maintain that balance.

Modern solutions such as CCTV, intruder alarms, smart doorbells, and remote access systems can also provide an additional layer of reassurance, helping homeowners keep an eye on things whether they're inside, outside, or away from the property altogether.

At Herts Security Systems, we know that security isn't just about protecting buildings, it's about supporting the way people live and during the warmer months, when life naturally shifts outdoors, a little extra awareness can go a long way towards keeping your home, family, and belongings protected.
