5 Facts About Security Systems and Burglary

An intruder in your home is one of the worst things you can experience. As well as risking your family’s safety and your possessions, burglaries can leave lasting damage and trauma long after the incident has taken place.

Naturally, homeowners want to do all they can to secure their property, but it can be hard to know where to start. We’ve written the following guide to provide facts and information to help you reduce the risk of a burglary to your home.

Burglary statistics

  • A burglary is said to take place every 40 seconds, with 1 million burglaries or attempted burglaries reported in the UK every year. This is a worrying number, but there are a few simple steps you can take to reduce the risk of your home being targeted.
  • Install strong outside lighting around your home, as burglars are less likely to creep around trying to access your property if they are at risk of being seen.

  • Keep car keys and door keys out of sight and away from letterboxes, as intruders can insert tools through it to fish for them.

  • Have an intruder alarm installed. This can act as a deterrent as intruders will see the visible box on your house, and if they do still attempt entry, the noise will alert neighbours and passers-by straight away.

  • Always ensure doors and windows are properly locked, even if you are just popping next door or spending time in your garden. Many intruders are opportunists.

  • Consider having CCTV installed outside your home, both as a deterrent and also for potential evidence should a break-in be attempted.

  • Security systems are there to help keep your home secure and increase your feeling of safety. If you’d like to find out more, we’re happy to offer advice and answer any questions you might have.
